Learn How To Clean A Microwave without using harsh and abrasive chemicals. Keep your house cleaning green and environmentally friendly with these simple natural cleaning tips!
I’m on a mission to clean my home and show you how to clean yours in the best and most green and environmentally friendly way I can.
I’ve been thinking of late that I’m starting to get bored with harsh chemicals. I’m not against them completely and they certainly have their place in my home. I do love bleach for my toilets BUT I want to find other ways that are chemical free and more environmentally friendly to help me clean my home. I recently purchased a big bottle of bleach and it has left horrible marks on my toilet seats which I’m not happy about and I can’t remove! It was so strong and harsh and now I’m in search of a way to get rid of these horrid marks.
During my search for chemical free cleaning I decided my microwave needed a good clean. I’m learning so much and love that I found a great method on how to clean a microwave without using anything but natural items in my home!
It’s so simple and I think if you’re looking for a chemical free alternative then this is the best solution for how you can clean your microwave!
You don’t need many ingredients AND they are also easy items to get a hold off if you don’t already have a them in your home.
HOW TO CLEAN A MICROWAVE WITHOUT HARSH CHEMICALS!
Before I explain what you need and the method, allow me to stop the pretty pictures and show you reality… He is my microwave BEFORE this fabulous, all natural deep clean that I gave it. Excuse the feralness (yes, I made that word up) 😉 but in order for me to test out whether this works my microwave had to be filthy and I would love to tell you that it’s never this gross… but it does get like this …. But NOT after I did this fabulous deep clean!
Here she is… the before!
Yep… it’s gross and I’m ashamed…
Your ingredients are minimal. All you will need are: A few lemons, a bowl of water and a large splash of white vinegar. As an added option you can add a couple of drops of lemon essential oil to make your microwave smell even more amazing! But I find the lemons on their own do this perfectly.
Here’s How To Clean A Microwave Without Harsh Chemicals!
Slice your lemons and add them to a bowl of water.
Add a large stash of white vinegar (I added about 4-5 tablespoons because I love to over do the vinegar thing with all my cleaning!) haha
Add a couple of drops of lemon oil into the mix (optional)
Place in the microwave and turn the microwave for 5-10 minutes. I did 5 minutes.
Once the microwave beeps, turn off but do not open the microwave door. Leave the lemon mix in the microwave and let it stand for an additional 5 minutes so that the heat can stay in the microwave and it can steam the inside and soften all the food and stains.
After the 5 minutes is up, open the microwave door and remove the blow of lemons. Please make sure to be careful as the bowl will be boiling hot.
Get a clean and damp cloth and wipe out all of the softened food and stains. Give it all a good wipe over.
Done!
Now your microwave is super clean, sterilised AND smells AMAZING and you don’t have to stand around and use or smell harsh chemicals and it’s even easier to clean!
I do this all the time and absolutely love it!
So now you know how to clean a microwave the easiest and most environmentally friendly way!
Happy Cleaning!!
Love this cleaning tip? Pin it so you don’t forget it!
Cleaning my makeover is one of those tasks I usually put off for as long as possible however this looks too easy not to try! Thanks for sharing 🙂
I’ve tried plain vinegar before but never with lemons! Sounds wonderful and so fresh! I’ll have to try it!!
let me know how it goes Chelsea! I love it 🙂
This is a great method however it is NOT chemical free. Vinegar is ascetic acid, lemons contain citric acid and water is dihydrogen monoxide. Everything is made of chemicals- chemical free is basically impossible 🙂 That lemon scent is amazing 🙂
Hi Amy, agree, not chemical free. Wrong use of words but it is free of Harsh chemicals which is what I love. And yes, the lemon scent is awesome! My fav part about it. 🙂
I’ve done the same thing by just using a glass measuring cup filled with water – but I love the addition of lemons to make it even fresher!
I love the lemons also, it’s the best part Lisa! 🙂
I have always cleaned my microwave the hard way, and I am definitely trying this! I’m sure the smell will be incredible! BTW, your photography is gorgeous!
Thanks so much Amanda. Enjoy cleaning your microwave 😉 x
I need to do this with my microwave-it’s so easy! Thanks Maria!
You’re welcome Sarah! 🙂
I always clean out my sink with lemon but never thought of using them for the microwave! That’s definitely the spot I hate cleaning!
I’m not a fan of cleaning my microwave either and even less my oven Taylor! haha. I also have a post for the oven coming up! 😉
Wow what a cool trick, I am definitely going to have to pin and try this! Love your photography too btw 🙂 xo
Thanks so much Jess. Hope you do try it, it’s awesome 🙂
Such an awesome trick! Thanks a lot for sharing 🙂
I’m just about to go try this out now – I don’t think we’ve cleaned the microwave in 2 years (but it’s surprisingly still not bad… weird!)
2 years is a very long time Nicole! haha. This is my microwave after like a month 😛 But I usually have toddlers at my feet demanding things off me so I work fast and make mess at times. haha
I LOVE this post. We are always looking for natural cleaners to use around our house. We usually use vinegar and water to clean the microwave, but it smells horrible. I’m sure this would make the house smell amazing. Stumbling, pinning, tweeting, and sharing on Google+. Thanks for linking up with Inspire Me Monday!! Have a wonderful week!
Thanks for sharing Nicole and it DOES make the house smell amazing! Use the lemons, you will love it 🙂
I wonder if something similar might work in the regular oven? That usually ends up looking grosser than the microwave.
I’ll be doing a post on my oven cleaning method also Lee! It is along these lines also. I’ve let my oven get absolutely vile for the up and coming post! haha
This is such a great tip! I hate having to use harsh chemicals because they make my allergies go totally nuts!
Thanks Stephanie. I’m the same. I’m just so upset after I used bleach on my toilets seats and it was so strong they now look like they are dirty with dried water or pee or something on there.
Boy, did I need this tip! I’ve used vinegar before but never thought to add lemons. So smart! Pinned, tweeted, and shared. Thanks for sharing at Merry Monday, hope to see you again next week!
Thanks so much for sharing around! xx
Great idea! Definitely going to try it, esp. since I have some lemons that are probably nearing their end. Visiting from Inspiration2 party.
A dirty microwave is such a pet peeve of mine. This is a great tip. I would love for you to share this at the Friday Favorites link party going on now.

Love this! And I love that you’re on a mission to help others live healthier, greener lives! I started selling (direct sales) a line of safer products with no harmful chemicals in them, because it really is hard to find good solutions. Things like vinegar and tea tree almost always work, though! Thanks for sharing at the #HomeMattersParty!
I just pinned this. What a great idea. I’m all for environmentally safe cleaners — and my microwave needs this. I saw your link at Courtney’s French Country Cottage/Feathered Nest Friday party.
Thanks for pinning Ann 🙂 Glad you like this post.
Love the tip about the lemons! Must smell so good after! Stopping by from The Creative Gallery link up!
