I considered not posting this but hey, it may come handy to someone, somewhere. We recently purchased a small outdoor set for our backyard area. The weather has been so nice and the daylight is disappearing around 8.30pm so plenty of nice daylight left for hubby and I to sit back, enjoy a wine or a tea and just chill and chat. I wanted it make it pretty so I got a couple of items from my kitchen, some beautiful hydrangea’s from my garden and off I went to decorate my new little outdoor table. I wasn’t feeling it with the mason jar, it was too clear.
I only have 6 mason jars which I cherish. Since moving to Belgium I can’t find any anywhere, not the Ball Mason brand anyway. I’m on the hunt. I love the look of the blue mason jar but don’t own any and blue was just the perfect colour for my arrangement so I did a little brain storming and this is what I came up with. It’s ridiculously easy, cheap and best of all not permanent.
HOW TO TURN MASON JARS BLUE THE QUICK, EASY AND CHEAP WAY
The answer is food colouring. I filled the mason jar all the way up to the top and placed 1 drop of food colouring into the water. Stirred around and I was happy with the shade of blue I got. You can dilute or make it darker if you wish. You can do this with any food colouring meaning you can have pink, yellow, green, purple (whatever your desire) mason jars without buying a million different jars. Also without the mess of painting/tinting or the permanent results!

Maybe you have thought of this already or have done it already but I felt pretty clever. haha.
So there you have it! This is how you turn mason jars blue the quickest, easiest, cleanest and cheapest way possible.

I’m pinning this for later color inspiration! The color combination of the purple hydrangeas, blue water, and bit of green leaf is so pretty. You are right…this is a simple idea, but a great way to spruce up some out door decorations at a party.
Thanks Kelli, pin away! Such a simple idea. I love the color combo also! Those hydrangeas are from my garden. Aren’t they just divine! x
These are incredibly beautiful! I have always wanted to try doing this with mason jars. Great pictures too!
Thank you Angeline 🙂 x
I always love this! I saw it a few times on pinterest and the combination of that blue and the pink/purple flowers is amazing. And food coloring? why didn’t i think of that? that’s such a good idea! I love the pictures! and your blog looks great, like your style! (:
Hi Renate 🙂 Isn’t it just the most beautiful combination. Thos hydrangeas are from my garden. Love them. They are starting to die off for another year though 🙁 Sad times. I’m planting all different colours for next year! Thank you for your lovely compliments 🙂 Look forward to checking out your blog! x
I have added food coloring to vases to change the color of white flowers yo blue, green, etc. Never thought to add it to make the jar a different color.
Thanks for linking up to Turn It Up Tuesday,
Bev

Thank you Katherine. Appreciate you taking the time to stop by. 🙂 x
I love that shade of blue! Also love the idea of using food colouring because I don’t want to permanently change the colour of my jars. I’m definitely going to do this! Pinning!
Thanks Carmia! Pin away! 😉 haha. Yes, it’s a sneaky little idea but I thought it was quite clever. 🙂

Haha. Thanks Mimi! I’ve added your linky party to my list of weekly linkups 😉 xx
wow. it’s so beautiful. i love it! but does the flower turns blue ? haha.
Thank you 🙂 They didn’t which surprised me! But they were purple hydrangeas so maybe if you put white in they could turn? If you ever do this, try it out first before doing it for a special occasion just in case 😉 haha.
I would have never thought of such an easy DIY trick but I love how beautiful these turned out. Thanks for sharing at Merry Monday!
Thanks Marie. Yes, I love the “temporary” aspect of it!
I’m so glad that you DID write this post because you’re my favorite for this week’s Merry Monday link party!
Thanks Lindsay! Yay for being your favourite!
I’d love to know if the flowers changed colour at all as time went on. When we were little we used to put light coloured flowers in jars with food colouring and they would start to change after a few days. We did you a pretty strong mix though. This looks so pretty so I’m really curious to know if they flowers get more of a blue tinge after a week.
Hi Julie, I didn’t see a change but the amount of food colouring I used was minimal and the hydrangeas where such a vibrant purple, but I think if you put in white flowers it might make a difference after a week, but only subtle with this amount of colour.
Maria, you won’t believe this, but I used this tip after you shared it at Five Star Frou-Frou last year, and am still using it! This week I tinted some water lavender, and popped fresh French Lavender sprigs into it. It looks adorable. Thankyou so much. Why don’t you pop over and share it at Five Star Frou-Frou again? We love a reminder! Mimi xxx
Glad you still do this Mimi! If I get a chance to pop over I will 🙂 Thanks for inviting me to link up.
Just gorgeous pictures, who cares if there are a lot of pictures for your post. Each is just beautiful. I have used food coloring in the water when I was a kid, it was quick and easy. Your one drop of blue is just right. Love it.
You flowers will absorb the food color from the water.
Yes, they may. You are only putting a tiny amount of food colouring in the water. Unless you are placing white flowers in the water I can’t imagine it would make a huge difference. But certainly worth testing. This is a great thing to do for a dinner party, wedding or special occasion. It’s temporary so hopefully it wouldn’t affect the flowers too much.
So beautiful!!!! What a wonderful idea!
You’re an absolute genius! Hahaha I’ve never even thought of doing that! Good job…
Haha. thanks!
Wow, Maria, this is quite the genius idea. I’m loving the possibilities of all kinds of color combos for the seasons. 🙂 The only problem is that ALL of my jars are blue, so now I need to buy some clear ones! 😉
Thanks a lot Kimm. Haha, get some clear ones and use different colors in them instead 😉
